My mom has a history of drug use and addictions. She takes vicodin to help the pain in legs. They hurt because of a blood clot she had a while ago that was surgically removed. That doctor said she could take vicodin for 6 months and after that she would be able to walk again. He also recomended that she eats a healthy diet and did leg exercises to help her walk again. She hasn't done either. It's been a year now and she still can't walk and relies on a power chair to help her move around. She still claims to have intense pain in her legs, so she has turned to obtaining vicodin by illegal methods.

I'm around her frequently, and she does appear to be in genuine pain. When she doesn't have enough vicodin in her she screams and cries in frustration, she begs me to put icy hot on her legs, and she takes tyelenol. She yells when a cat brushes against her leg, she waves them around to calm them down, and she is sobbing as I type this. She has taken percocet a couple times, which eases her pain. This is my question: Why is she in pain? Withdrawels due to vicodin? If this was the case, wouldn't her pain be more global as opposed to the focal point being in her legs? Also, does percocet contain the same addictive properties as vicodin? I tend to think it's real pain, and the reason it hasn't vanished as the doctor predicted is because she hasn't taken care of herself properly. My entire family believes she's addicted, but they are never even around her. They think I'm biased for being her daughter, but I'm not that sentimental. Please shed some light on this situation for me, and provide me with any links that may help. Thank you.

Probably she's taking too many opiates for too long now. Doing this depletes your natural pain relievers, endorphins. So subsequently, when she goes into withdrawal, her pain worsens because she had no opiates and no endorphins. She needs to exercise, there's no question about it. I'm sure she feels like she can;t but this is the only way she will feel batter naturally. She also should be medically detoxed. Have you tried speaking with her?

I think your mom is doing well but I don't understand the reason for the such severe pain in her legs. I have heard of some case where people experience pain they are not as severe as you have mentioned. Have you consulted a doctor about this? If not I would suggest you to just talk to a doctor who has handled such case as they will be able to put some more light on the problem.

Vicodin has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received the real medication, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it is possible to see what Vicodin side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group who took the placebo. Taking Vicodin with food may help reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting. Many people consider themselves "allergic" to Vicodin if they experience nausea and vomiting while taking it. However, this is a common side effect and does not indicate a true allergy. In many cases, this side effect goes away as a person continues to use Vicodin.
